Senator Silent while more Democrats Call for Abolishing ICE

Albuquerque, NM – While more Democrats continue to call for abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the Mick Rich for U.S. Senate campaign called on Democrat Senator Martin Heinrich to tell New Mexicans where he stands.

“As more Democrats in New Mexico and around the country call for abolishing ICE, New Mexico’s junior Senator Martin Heinrich – who represents a border state – refuses to take a stand,” Mick Rich campaign spokesman Mike Lonergan said. “The men and women of ICE protect New Mexicans from crimes like drugs and human trafficking, and our senator should support them. Martin Heinrich needs to tell his constituents where he stands on leaving our borders unsecured.”

Among the growing calls to abolish ICE: former New Mexico Democrat Party Chair and candidate for Congress Deb Haaland, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-MA), and others.

“As the Democratic base is rallying behind cries to get rid of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency, elected officials are beginning to echo the message.” (MSNBC, More Democrats call to abolish ICE, 7/1/18)

“Deb Haaland, a Native American who stunned the New Mexico political establishment with a House primary victory early this month, supports the idea.” (The New York Times, How ‘Abolish ICE’ Went From Social Media to Progressive Candidates’ Rallying Cry, 6/29/18)

“Several prominent Democrats who are mulling a bid for the White House in 2020 sought to bolster their progressive credentials this week by calling for major changes to immigration enforcement, with some pressing for the outright abolition of the federal government’s chief immigration enforcement agency.” (Associated Press: ‘Abolish ICE’ emerging as new rallying call for 2020 Democrats, 6/29/18)
